Holiday Express Needs Blanket Donations for 2008 Season

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas for most people at this time of year. However, the holidays are an extremely lonely time for the homeless, the hungry, the mentally and terminally ill, the physically disabled and those who are less fortunate.

That is why each holiday season for the past 15 years, Holiday Express, a non-profit organization comprised of more than 600 volunteers, 90 of whom are musicians, packs up the bus and throws 50 holiday parties in 30 days to those who need it most in the tri-state area.

Each Holiday Express event comes complete with a visit from the Grinch, Frosty and of course Santa. While the live music provided by the Holiday Express musicians enlivens the party, the volunteer elves are busy painting faces, helping with arts and crafts, dancing, smiling, and giving plenty of hugs to the audience.

No one leaves the party with-out a gift bag packed by Holiday Express Elves (warehouse volunteers) that is suited towards the needs of each audience member. Gift bags often include blankets to help keep the homeless warm or keep those in wheelchairs covered while being transported. This year Holiday Express is in desperate need of new blankets. Anyone interested in donating blankets should contact Holiday Express at 732-544-8010. More than 15,000 gift bags will be packed and distributed during our events.

Holiday Express will begin the season on November 24th and end the season at St. John’s Soup Kitchen in Newark and at Trinity Church Soup Kitchen in Asbury Park on Christmas Eve. During this time the Holiday Express volunteers will spend most of their time on buses traveling to soup kitchens, children’s hospitals, developmental centers and psychiatric hospitals spreading holiday cheer throughout New Jersey.

With a limited number of public appearances don’t miss the chance to see Holiday Express perform at NJPAC in Newark on 12/10 and at the Count Basie Theatre on 12/16 and 12/18. Tickets for these shows are on sale now.

If members of the media would like to attend an event and share in the joy experienced by the charities that Holiday Express visits please contact Krista Newbert at 908-489-1538 or at kristanewbert@comcast.net to make arrangements.
